The discovery in Montpellier, in november 1996 of a new surgical treatment for generalized dystonia has involved many demands for therapeutical follow-up from severals national and international hospital centers. We had to develop this new surgical approach and to organize quickly the therapeutical follow up of children and adults suffering from this disease.
In order to go on with research, the research unit on movement disorders (URMA) has officially been created on june the 23rd in 1999. Because of the absence of official support, our unit has been created as an association «loi 1901», being so able to reach autonomy. Financial supports come from hospital projects and private donations.
The research unit is composed of physicians, physiologists, engineers and students. It is set up in the neurosurgery departement premises. U.R.M.A has obtained the university prize "Bonus Qualité Recherche" and is part of the team "motor efficiency and deficiency" of the Montpellier I university.
